Why Custom GIS?
Whether we recognize it or not, we all know location is important. When we select a home, when we go to the store, and when we select a vacation spot we use location and ask questions and look for information relevant to location:
- What other stores are on my way to the grocery store?
- Is there any hiking near our hotel?
- How far is Disneyland from where we are staying?
Location is important, and leveraging locational details provides increased knowledge and better decision making.
Custom GIS involves adding a locational component to existing systems and building location into new systems, or in many instances simply providing the tools and processes to examine and present location that is already hidden within our data. Many existing systems already contain location information, but fail to provide a method or capability of extracting, analysing, and displaying this information. The address, phone number, or postal codes of our customers are all examples of locations built into existing systems. Custom GIS enhances the information potential of databases and applications to provide the tools, processes, and presentations necessary to extract the power of location in data.
